What “oversell” means when you sell from chat

Stock reserve

Oversell means you promised a buyer goods you cannot honestly fulfill from free stock — usually because the last units were already reserved, sold, damaged, or only “on the way.” In chat retail it often looks like two polite “yes, it’s yours” messages for one physical dress.

Oversell vs related problems

  • Oversell — promise > free quantity
  • Delay — you have the goods but ship late
  • Mis-pick — you ship the wrong variant
  • Marketplace stock conflict — same SKU sold on Wildberries/Ozon and in your chat without one free pool

Why chat sales oversell easily

  • Answers from memory or a shelf photo, not free stock
  • No reserve when someone says “беру”
  • Several managers in parallel threads
  • Counting on-hand instead of free (reserved units still “look available”)
  • Selling goods that are only ordered from the supplier

What oversell costs

Refunds, angry reviews, lost trust, courier chaos, and staff blaming each other. One oversell can cost more than a week of ads for that SKU.

Practical checklist

  1. Promise only free stock.
  2. A verbal “беру” needs a hold with an expiry.
  3. One shared truth for stock — not three chats.
  4. In-transit is not free until goods receipt.
  5. Cancel releases the hold the same day.

Optional next step

Teach the team the word and the free-vs-reserved distinction first. Shared stock next to chat orders reduces accidents — for example reserve-aware stock in datalizeCRM — but refusing to promise ghosts already stops most oversell.
